Theatre of Oppression
Key Concepts
* All theatre is necessarily political
* "Spectator" is a bad word
* Empathy: dangerous weapon
FORUM THEATRE - A Theatre of Oppressed method in which a scene demonstrating an oppression is presented by actors and then replayed with spontaneous interventions from the audience members who replace the protagonist. (Babbage:2004:142)
IMAGE THEATRE - based around the use of the body to express themes, emotions and attitudes. Their bodies or others bodies are sculptured to articulate a chosen theme.
(Babbage:2004:142)
INVISIBLE THEATRE - Whereby a prepared scene or action addressing an important issue of social concern is played in a public context as if it were real. The audience remains unaware they have witnessed a piece of drama.
(Babbage:2004:142)
LEGISLATIVE THEATRE - aims to theatricalise political by establishing a direct line between the Theatre of the Oppressed explorations and the actual law making process.
NEWSPAPER THEATRE - A method using daily news items as the basis for a theatrical performance.
